Finding the Right Used Boat and What You Should Know

When shopping for a used boat some of the things you should take into consideration are cost, amount of use, what kind of use, type and condition of the boat.

When taking pricing into account, it's a good idea to check out the N.A.D.A. guide to see what the used boat you're considering should be worth. Also, try an online search and check the classified ads as well to check prices on comparable boats.

Another thing to consider when buying a used boat is the amount of time you intend to use it. Will it be more of an occasional weekend, every weekend during the summer or do you live in an area where the climate allows for more frequent opportunities to get out on the water.

What will be the main purpose of your used boat? Is your interest waterskiing, fishing, cruising, recreation or combinations thereof? Will you be on salt water or fresh water? It's a good idea to think these things through and figure out what would work best for you, your family and perhaps even friends that may be joining you. You will also want to consider how many people you will generally have aboard when determining the capacity of your boat.

Once you've determined what the main use and size of the used boat you're wanting to get is you'll know the type of to go for. There are variety of boats in each category differing in size and price range. Some can be used for more than one purpose such as fishing and waterskiing.

The condition of a used boat is obviously of the utmost importance. That being said some of the main things to look for are the hours on the engine the more below 500 the better to help keep repair and maintenance to a minimum. Check the hull for stress cracks, visible damage, tap around on it to ensure that it's solid, check for any kind of discoloration or areas where the color doesn't mach up. inspect for gelcoat blisters. Dry rot is another thing you should look for, this is a problem that occurs from moisture getting to the wood causing a fungus that feeds off of it. In fiberglass boats if water is allowed to get through cracks or openings in areas where wood lies beneath i.e. transom or deck dry rot can occur. Check the propeller and shaft for any damage.See what kind of shape the upholstery and interior is in. Make sure the bilge is working well.Take the boat out and see how it rides, handles and shifts. Make sure everything is functioning properly.

Okay, just to summarize remember when you're looking to purchase a used boat think about what it's going to cost you, how often you will be using it, how you will be using it, what kind you'll be wanting to purchase and the condition of the craft you're interested in.

Don't forget to do a thorough search online and in the classifieds to help find the best deal. Be sure to check out related forums, sites and talk to people you know that own or have a owned a boat. As when purchasing anything used you can never have to much information to help you make the right decision.
